When people hear someone talk about reshaping your cornea to correct vision problems, they might feel apprehensive. However, this is exactly the concept behind orthokeratology, or Ortho-k for short. Ortho-k uses special gas permeable contact lenses that gradually and safely change the shape of your cornea, resulting in vision correction without the use of surgical procedures.
How Ortho-k Works
Unlike regular contact lenses, Ortho-k lenses are worn at night to sleep. In the morning, they are taken out, allowing you to enjoy a much clearer view as your corneas have been slowly corrected.
After your initial eye exam, your optometrist will recommend and prescribe the right CRT or corneal refractive therapy lenses for you. Wearing these lenses “reshapes” your cornea, allowing for better refraction and correcting the effects of nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. One advantage Ortho-k lenses have over traditional contact lenses is that they are not meant to be worn all the time. In fact, it’s best that you use them at night before you go to sleep.
Your First Morning
Results can vary from one patient to another, but it’s common to see big improvements after a week or more of continued use. Do not expect to see immediate changes on your first morning. In fact, it’s important to still bring your eyeglasses or a pair of contacts with you on the first day. As your eyes begin to adjust, you can have up to three days of clearer vision.
Caring for Your Ortho-k Lenses
Ortho-k lenses can be treated just like soft contacts. Follow your doctor’s instructions for proper care and don’t forget to practice safe hygiene. You may be prescribed lubricating drops to make application easier.
