Orthokeratology or ortho-k is a non-surgical procedure that improves your vision by gently reshaping your eyes as you sleep. This treatment uses special gas-permeable contacts called CRT® lenses, which can temporarily correct farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia. However, choosing a doctor for this treatment can be a challenge.
Here are tips for finding a local orthokeratology doctor.
Do Your Research
Most eye care providers today have their own websites. When there’s a specialist you’d like to visit, check their site for customer reviews and testimonials. If it happens that they don’t have a website, you might still find reviews in online directories.
Visit the Clinic
Visiting the clinic before the actual eye exam can give a feel of the place and see if it has a comfortable and professional ambiance. Also, be mindful of how their staff treats you and other patients.
Talk to the Doctor
Only choose an eye doctor you’re comfortable to work with. You shouldn’t feel intimidated by them so you can freely voice out your concerns.
Asking questions can help you get to know your eye doctor more. Inquire how many orthokeratology patients they usually see every day and month. You can also ask how much continuing education credit hours they attend yearly, specifically focused on the treatment.
It would help to determine whether they design custom orthokeratology molds for their patients or use commercially available molds. See if they measure the length of the eye to monitor axial elongation. You may also ask about when they started treating patients with orthokeratology and how many successful cases they’ve had.
