Eyeglasses have been around for centuries and remain one of the safest and most effective ways to correct vision. But as with using contacts, they’ll need proper care and maintenance to make the most of them. Eye & Vision Care, the area’s leading optometrist, shares ways to better take care of your eyeglasses.
1. Disinfect your eyeglasses safely. This is simple enough to do–just clean them with lukewarm water and a gentle dish soap. Massage the soap onto each lens, rinse them, and then dry them with a microfiber cloth. There are also pre-moistened lens wipes available today, allowing for easier and more convenient disinfection. By cleaning your eyeglasses, you can eliminate the risk of eye infections caused by dust, dirt and bacteria clinging to the glass’ surface. Avoid using rubbing alcohol or other products that contain ammonia or bleach because they can damage the lens coating of your eyeglasses.
2. Store them properly. When you have stylish glasses with perfect-fitting frames, you’ll want to make sure they can last as long as possible. One way to do this is to store them correctly when you’re not using them. This not only keeps dirt and debris away from your eyeglasses, it also protects them from being scratched, bent, or broken.
3. Grip your eyeglasses firmly. As you clean your eyeglasses, hold the frames by gripping the section that crosses the bridge of the nose. This keeps you from inadvertently bending the frame. Aside from being uncomfortable to use, bend frames prevent you from seeing through your glasses properly.
4. Set them down carefully. Taking a break from wearing your eyeglasses? Make sure you don’t lay them lens-down to avoid scratches.
