Being able to buy frames and lenses from the comfort of your home sounds appealing, especially during these times where we’re all avoiding exposure to COVID-19. However, while online eye tests sound like a good solution, are they enough to replace a visit to an eye doctor? The eye care specialists at Eye and Vision Care share an overview of online eye tests.

How Do Online Eye Tests Work?
A typical online eye test requires a computer or a smartphone, and enough distance between to sit back on. Some websites will give you precise measurements. The tests are similar to the ones that are performed in eye care clinics. One of these is the Snellen chart test, where you read a series of letters or symbols that get smaller as you progress.
You may also be asked to answer a series of questions, such as those related to eyestrain, or how many hours you use devices and/or computers in a day. Some tests also include color-blindness and light sensitivity. Some websites offer prescriptions for eyeglasses or contacts based on the results of your tests, which will later be delivered to your home.
Are Online Tests Any Good?
Online eye tests are relatively new, and there aren’t enough studies to know for sure whether they are comparable to getting an in-person eye exam. Certain tests simply can’t be performed online and should be performed by an eye care professional. For example, you can’t go online and purchase contact lenses for orthokeratology. You need to undergo a thorough eye examination, which may include dilation tests.
That is not to say that online eye tests are useless. In fact, they may be useful in certain situations, like for people who are not sure whether or not they have vision problems. In such cases, online tests should be followed by a visit to an eye care specialist. It’s also important to keep in mind that online tests are not designed for people who need a strong prescription for contacts or eyeglasses.
